Koirala, the first elected Prime Minister of Nepal was imprisoned at 1947 and 1948 at Singhadurbar for his involvement in anti-Rana political activities and he was released after 29 days long hunger strike. It was in his initiation and leadership that Nepal got its first democracy in 2007 B. S overthrowing 104 years long antonate of Rana rule in Nepal. Koirala then concentrated on developing Nepali political structure, but his purpose remained unfulfilled due to the political barricade created by late king Tribhuvan, and this obstruction continued even during late King Mahendra’s rule. Even though the election of the constituent assembly was supposed to be held on 2007 B.S. along with the dawn of democracy, it could not take place. However, the King agreed to the election of Parliament instead of constitution assembly election in 2015 B.S.(1959 A.D.). B. P. Koirala emerged as a great hero through this election by winning the 2/3rd seats that his party had won in the Parliament and becoming the first elected Prime Minister of Nepal.
The new government could not last more than 18 months and on 1st Poush 2017 B.S., late King Mahendra with the help of army staged a coup and imprisoned all the ministers along with B.P Koirala in Singhdurbar. After a few months, they were sent to Sundarijal Jail to be finally released after 8 years of rigorous imprisonment.
Soon after his release, he was forced to India directed by his strong will and dedication to reinstate democracy in Nepal. According to his diary, though he believed India would support him in this case, he was disappointed by late Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He returned back to Nepal on Poush 16, 2033(December 30, 1976) for national unity and reconciliation, he was taken directly to Sundarijal jail on the very day.
Despite all the barriers and obstacles he went through, from the Kings of Nepal, he turned out to be a great national hero. Not only in his own country, B.P. Koirala is still highly admired in India for the role he played in the Independence of India against British rule. He was also imprisoned in India by the British for a few years for his involvement in the Indian independence struggle. His contribution towards the Independence and democratic revolution is truly praiseworthy.
When he was in India, he spent most of his time in Banaras leading the democrate movement. In the meantime, he had collected a lot of arms thinking that they would be useful if any armed struggle had to be initiated against the Panchayati system in Nepal.[/vc_column_text]
