  • King Mahendra turned the entire country into a big prison on Poush 1, 2017 B.S. and terrotized people across the country. First elected Prime Minister of the country BP Koirala along with Speaker and other Ministers and Assistant Ministers were arrested and kept in Singhadurbar prison amid tight security.

  • The government released some leaders in Falgun 2017 B.S. and transferred Prime Minister BP Koirala, ministers Ganeshman Singh, Surya Prasad Upadhyaya, Ram Narayan Mishra and Prem Raj Angdembe, Speaker Krishna Prasad Bhattarai and assistance ministers Dibansingh Rai, Yogendraman Sherchan and Jaman Singh Gurung, among others, to Sundarijal prison.

  • Speaker Krishna Prasad Bhattarai was shifted to Nakkhu Jail from Sundarijail in 2025 B.S. Assistant Ministers Dibansingh Rai and Yogendra Man Sherchan were released in Bhadra 2025 BS.

  • Propagating Policy of National Reconciliation, BP Koirala and Ganeshman Singh returned to Nepal on Poush 16 2033 BS. However, both of them were arrested at the airport and sent to Sundarijal jail. There were shifted to Police Training Center and released on bail only in 2035 BS. The government had registered seven cases related to treason. The cases could have brought the duo death penalty.

  • Efforts to transform Sundarijal jail into BP Museum started after the democratic movement of 1990. As the army was loyal to the palace then, the palace and the army were not ready to transform the jail into a museum. As a result, people in favor of establishing a museum there had to face many obstacles.

  • The concept for BP Museum, which was presented by Parshuram Pokharel (Founder Chairperson), was approved by Nepali Congress General Secretary Sushil Koirala on Poush 9, 2054 B.S.

  • Parshuram Pokharel unveiled the concept paper for BP Museum at a program organized at BP Chowk, in front of Sundarijal Jail, in the presence of Girija Prasad Koirala.

  • The government formed a five-member BP Museum Study Taskforce on Magh 2 2054 BS.

  • On Magh 13 2054 B.S, the then Army Chief wrote to the palace that Sundarijal jail shouldn’t be developed into BP Museum. He had even proposed to dismantle all buildings in the jail premises.

  • On Shrawan 21 2055 BS, the government formed another taskforce under the leadership of culture secretary. Representatives of defence ministry, Nepal Army, chief of Department of Survey and Parshuram Pokharel.
